Why don’t your employees use safety inflation cages?
Most employers do provide their employees with safety cages for inflating heavy truck tires. The problem is that most workers never, or almost never, use them.Over the past few months, I’ve been in many tire shops and most were equipped with safety inflation cages, but they were usually covered in dust or piled up with boxes or tools, pretty much like a storage shelf or a coat hanger!
In order to use these cages, you need to know what they’re really for and what to do with them. In my opinion, you need to put emphasis on training, not just right after hiring, but on an ongoing basis. It only takes 15 minutes a month to remind workers of the right way to use them and why. Have the training done by one of your best employees, someone the others respect.
When you inflate a tire to 100 PSI and the wheel has a defect, the hub can blow free with up to 50,000 lbs of force. That does a lot of damage. Keep your employees safe by Using an inflation cage that is safe, and above all, certified. Don’t make it yourself. It may seem like a simple enough job, but it’s more complicated than you might think.
